Headlights

Why Check

  • Dirty lenses can cut your night vision upto 90%
  • Even with good lights, at 80 kmph one can see only about 4 seconds ahead
  • A dead headlight may keep you from seeing a stalled car or a sharp curve in time
  • An out of line light can shine where it doesn't help you and may blind other drivers

 

What to check

Driver Checks:

 

  • Burned out bulbs
  • Dirty lenses

 

Mechanic Checks:

 

  • Headlight alignment

When to check

Driver Check:

 

  • When you fill petrol
  • After driving on muddy or wet roads
  • Shine the lights on a wall before driving at night. Make sure that both high and low beams are working.

  • Scratches and cracks to see if glass needs to be changed
  • Windshield wiper fluid level to make sure there is sufficient amount

Tyres

Why Check

  • Worn out or flattened tyres increase stopping distances on wet surfaces, sand or gravel
  • Worn or flattened tyres decrease control over vehicle
  • Unbalanced tyres and low tyre pressure cause the steering wheel to shake and tread to wear out. Low tyre pressure also reduces mileage and vehicle control
  • Worn tread and deflated tyre can cause aquaplaning

What to check

Driver Checks:

  • Check tyre air pressure when tyres are cold

 

Mechanic Checks:

  • Tyre balance, alignment and damage

When to check

Driver Check:

 

  • Once a week
  • When you fill petrol

 

Mechanic Check:

 

  • Twice a year or during a tune up or an oil change
 
Footbrake and clutch pedal

Why Check

  • Required to change gear and stop the vehicle
  • Problems in both can make driving impossible and dangerous

  • Pedal rubbers fitted to the brake, pressure required to operate the brake and freedom of movement in the clutch
